We can have one without the other I can forgive you even if you are not repentent , but reconciliation requires both. Of course, this is so obvious, but Brummer explains so clearly and helpfully, and links this back to the free relationship, locating atonement not in a performance of Christ, but rather in the free and authentic encounter between a repentant sinner and a forgiving God.

He then applies these thoughts to atonement, Christology and Trinity, making this a good example of a systematic theology all in pages , which I found very helpful as a theologian. It was in these last chapters, and particularly his chapter on Trinity, that I found myself departing from his views. He is highly critical of the social model of the Trinity, which is a pity because it would have fitted well with the rest of his thesis.

He argues for a form of modalism, which I found to be impoverished and tending towards monism.

But if you're into that, you'll probably enjoy that last chapter. All in all, this is an invaluable addition to my collection of texts on atonement. I strongly recommend it. Go to Amazon.
